Introduction

The United Kingdom is one of the most searched study destinations for Indian students — and for good reason. Shorter degree durations, globally recognised universities, strong work rights during and after studies, and a clear post-graduation visa make it a genuinely practical choice.

But the UK student visa process has specific requirements that confuse a lot of applicants — especially the CAS number, the financial proof rules, and the English language options. At Volumaax in Ahmedabad, we field these questions daily. Below are the 20 most common ones, answered clearly and honestly as of June 2026.

Part 1: Before You Apply — Admission & CAS

What is a CAS number and why do I need it before applying for a UK student visa?

CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It is a unique reference number issued by your UK university or college after you have accepted your offer, paid any required deposit, and met all conditions of your admission — such as submitting degree certificates or English test scores.

Without a CAS, you cannot submit a UK student visa application. The CAS contains your course details, start date, tuition fee, and the university’s sponsor licence number — all of which UKVI uses to verify your application. Your university will send your CAS number by email, typically 4–6 weeks before your course starts.

I have an offer from a UK university but have not accepted it yet. When should I confirm?

Accept your offer as early as possible — especially if you need to meet conditions like IELTS or A-level results. The CAS is generated only after all conditions are met and you have formally accepted. Since the visa takes 3–8 weeks to process, and you can apply no earlier than 6 months before your course starts, timing matters. A student aiming for a September intake should ideally confirm acceptance by June and have their CAS by July at the latest.

My UK university wants an unconditional offer before issuing CAS. What does unconditional mean?

An unconditional offer means the university has reviewed all your documents — degree transcripts, English scores, references — and is offering you a place with no further conditions to meet. A conditional offer, by contrast, requires you to meet specific criteria before the place is confirmed. You cannot receive a CAS on a conditional offer. Once all conditions are satisfied and the offer becomes unconditional, the university proceeds to issue your CAS.

Part 2: Financial Requirements

How much money do I need to show for a UK student visa?

You must show that you have enough money to pay your first year’s tuition fee plus living costs. The living cost requirements are:

  • London: £1,334 per month for up to 9 months = £12,006
  • Outside London: £1,023 per month for up to 9 months = £9,207

So a student at a Manchester university needs to show approximately £9,207 in living costs plus their first-year tuition. This money must have been in your bank account (or a parent’s account) for at least 28 consecutive days before you apply. Keep the bank statement showing this period ready for your application.

Can my parents’ savings be used for the financial requirement?

Yes — if the money is in your parents’ account and they are officially sponsoring your studies. You must submit a letter from your parent confirming they are your financial sponsor, along with their bank statements showing the required funds held for 28 consecutive days. The letter does not need to be notarised, but it must be signed and dated. UKVI cross-checks the letter with the bank statements, so the figures must match.

What if my university holds my fees as part of a scholarship or deposit — do I still need to show funds?

If your university is an A-rated (Highly Trusted) sponsor and they have received your tuition fees in advance or are officially holding funds on your behalf, they can state this in your CAS. In that case, you may be exempt from the financial maintenance requirement for the tuition portion. You would still need to show living cost funds separately unless the university covers accommodation too. Check your CAS carefully — it will state whether maintenance is being held.

Part 3: IELTS & English Language Requirements

Is IELTS mandatory for a UK student visa in 2026?

A language test is required — but IELTS is not the only option. UK universities and UKVI accept the following:

  • IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI
  • TOEFL iBT
  • PTE Academic
  • Cambridge English (B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency)
  • Trinity College London ISE

The visa minimum is B2 level (CEFR). IELTS equivalent is typically 5.5 overall for visa purposes, though most universities set their own higher requirements — usually 6.0 to 6.5 for undergraduate and 6.5 to 7.0 for postgraduate.

Can I use an MOI certificate instead of IELTS for a UK student visa?

Some UK universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate — a letter from your previous institution confirming your course was taught entirely in English. However, this is an institution-specific exemption, not a UKVI policy. Whether your university accepts MOI depends entirely on their own admission policy. Always check directly with your university admissions team before assuming MOI is accepted. If the university requires IELTS, you cannot substitute MOI for the visa application either.

My IELTS score is 6.0 overall but I have 5.5 in writing. Will this be a problem?

It depends on two things: your university’s specific band requirement and the UKVI minimum. UKVI requires B2 in all four skills for most courses — a 5.5 in writing is below B2 (which maps to IELTS 6.0 in most frameworks). Some universities set a minimum of 5.5 in each band, in which case you meet their requirement. But if the university requires 6.0 in all bands, your 5.5 in writing means you do not meet the admission condition and cannot receive an unconditional offer or CAS. Retaking the writing component is the cleanest solution.

Part 4: Visa Application Process

When should I apply for my UK student visa?

You can apply up to 6 months before your course start date. The earliest you can enter the UK is 1 month before your course starts (1 week for courses shorter than 12 months). Applying 8–10 weeks before your planned travel date gives comfortable time for standard processing (3 weeks) plus any unexpected delays. Do not apply too early — if your course is in September, applying in February would mean your visa expires well before your studies end.

What documents do I need to submit for a UK student visa application?

  • Valid passport (with at least 6 months validity beyond your intended stay)
  • CAS reference number from your university
  • Bank statements showing required funds held for 28 consecutive days
  • Financial sponsor letter (if using parent’s funds)
  • English language test certificate (IELTS/TOEFL/PTE)
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate from a UK-approved clinic in India (required for stays over 6 months)
  • Passport-size photographs meeting UKVI specifications
  • Previous visa refusal history — must be disclosed; non-disclosure is misrepresentation

Is there an interview for the UK student visa?

UK student visa applications from India are primarily document-based — there is no standard in-person interview at the consulate. However, UKVI can request an interview if they need to verify information. Universities in the UK may also conduct their own pre-admission interviews (via Zoom or phone) to confirm your academic intentions, which is separate from the visa process. If UKVI requests a credibility interview, it will be conducted at the VFS Global centre.

Part 5: Work Rights & Life in the UK

Can I work while studying in the UK and for how many hours?

Yes. If you are at a UK university (degree-level institution), you can work:

  • Up to 20 hours per week during term time
  • Full-time during official vacation periods (summer, Christmas, Easter)

If you are at a further education college (not a university), the limit is 10 hours per week during term. Working more than your permitted hours is a visa breach and can affect all future UK visa applications. The right to work is stamped into your visa — no separate work permit is required.

What is the Graduate Visa and how long does it last?

The Graduate Visa (also called the Post-Study Work visa) allows you to stay in the UK and work after completing your degree. Key details:

  • Duration: 2 years for Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates, 3 years for PhD graduates
  • No job offer needed — you can work in any role, for any employer, or be self-employed
  • Must be applied for while your Student visa is still valid
  • Your institution must be a licensed student sponsor and you must have studied in the UK physically (not fully online)

During this Graduate Visa period, many students receive a Skilled Worker Visa offer from an employer and switch — beginning the path to UK permanent residency (ILR).

Can I bring my family to the UK on a student visa?

Dependants (spouse/partner and children under 18) can accompany you only if you are:

  • Studying at postgraduate level at a Higher Education Provider, or
  • A government-sponsored student

Undergraduate students cannot bring dependants on a UK Student visa from January 2024 onwards. This rule was tightened significantly in 2024 and affected many Indian students who had planned to bring their families. Postgraduate students (Master’s and PhD) can still bring dependants, who are also permitted to work full-time in the UK.

Part 6: After Studies — Staying in the UK

Can I switch from a Student visa to a work visa from inside the UK?

Yes — this is the most common route. If you receive a Skilled Worker Visa offer from a licensed UK employer while on your Graduate Visa or Student visa (within 3 months of course completion), you can switch in-country without leaving the UK. You do not need to travel back to India to apply. Your new Skilled Worker Visa begins from the date of approval and your 5-year ILR clock starts from that point.

→ See also: Path to UK permanent residency

What is the path from UK Student visa to permanent residency?

  1. Complete your degree on a Student visa
  2. Apply for and receive the Graduate Visa (2 years)
  3. Receive a Skilled Worker Visa offer — switch in-country
  4. Work in the UK for 5 continuous years on the Skilled Worker Visa
  5. Apply for ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) — UK permanent residency
  6. After 1 year of ILR, apply for British citizenship

The total journey from starting your UK degree to citizenship is typically 8–10 years for most Indian students. The Graduate Visa years do not count toward the 5-year ILR requirement unless you are on a Skilled Worker Visa during that time.
